Can I swim after PresbyMAX?

< 1 min read

Swimming after PresbyMAX should wait until the corneal surface has healed and your surgeon is satisfied with your early recovery. Water exposure too soon can increase the risk of irritation or infection.

Pools and Hot Tubs

Chlorinated and heated water can be harsh on healing eyes.

  • Swimming pools and hot tubs are usually avoided for at least 2-4 weeks, or as advised at follow‑up.
  • When you first return to the pool, wear well‑fitting watertight goggles.
  • Do not rub your eyes after swimming; rinse gently with clean water if needed.
  • Use preservative‑free lubricating drops afterwards if your eyes feel dry or irritated.

Open Water and Water Sports

Lakes, rivers, and the sea carry additional microbial and debris risks.

  • Delay open‑water swimming and water sports until your clinician confirms it is safe, which may be longer than for pools.
  • Protect your eyes with goggles where possible and avoid intentional underwater opening of the eyes without protection.
  • Stop and seek urgent review if you notice pain, redness, discharge, or a drop in vision after swimming.
  • Continue following all prescribed drop regimens around any planned water activities.
