Can I swim after external Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) surgery?

< 1 min read

Swimming after external DCR surgery should be avoided for a period because water can irritate the wound, tube, and nasal passage, increasing infection risk.

Early restrictions around water

In the first weeks, the incision and tear drainage pathway are very delicate. Keeping the area dry helps healing and comfort.

  • Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, and the sea initially
  • Do not open your eyes under water until fully cleared
  • Protect the operated area from splashes during bathing
  • Use prescribed drops and nasal sprays as directed
  • Contact the clinic if redness, discharge, or pain follow accidental splashing

Returning to swimming safely

Once your surgeon is happy with healing and tube position, swimming can be reintroduced gradually.

  • Check the recommended waiting time, often several weeks
  • Start with short sessions in a clean, well-maintained pool
  • Wear well-fitting goggles to keep water away from the eye
  • Avoid very hot pools and saunas to reduce bleeding risk
  • Seek advice if pain, bleeding, or blurred vision occur after swimming
