Showering after PRK is allowed quite soon, but extra care is needed to prevent water, soap, and shampoo from irritating the healing corneal surface. This reduces discomfort and infection risk.
First Few Days
Gentle techniques help protect the eyes.
- Shower with your eyes closed and keep the spray directed away from your face as much as possible.
- Avoid rubbing your eyes if water splashes on them; instead let it drain away and use lubricating drops afterwards.
- Do not submerge your face in bath water or use hot tubs.
- Pat the area around your eyes dry with a clean towel rather than wiping.
As Healing Progresses
Restrictions relax gradually.
- After about a week, many people can return to a more usual shower routine while still avoiding vigorous eye rubbing.
- Swimming and heavy splashing should remain off‑limits until your surgeon confirms it is safe.
- Continue prescribed drops and mention any persistent irritation at follow‑up.
- Use mild, non‑stinging products if your eyes remain sensitive.
