Can I shower after lens replacement surgery?

< 1 min read

You can usually shower soon after lens replacement surgery, but it is important to keep water, shampoo, and soap out of your eye while it heals. This reduces irritation and infection risk.

First Week

Extra care protects the small incision and lens implant.

  • Shower with your eyes closed and avoid directing the spray at your face.
  • If water or products enter the eye, do not rub; allow them to rinse away gently, then use lubricating drops.
  • Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, and saunas, which carry higher infection risks.
  • Pat around the eye dry with a clean towel rather than rubbing.

After the First Week

Restrictions ease as the wound seals and comfort improves.

  • You can usually return to a more normal shower routine while still avoiding vigorous eye rubbing.
  • Check with your surgeon about timing for swimming and underwater activities.
  • Continue all prescribed drops, including after showering.
  • Report persistent irritation, discharge, or blurred vision for assessment.
