Can I shower after chalazion removal surgery?

< 1 min read

You can usually shower soon after chalazion removal surgery, but you should keep soap and water away from the eye at first.

Early showering and eyelid care

In the first days, the wound is delicate and easily irritated. Gentle washing helps keep the area clean without disturbing healing tissues.

  • Shower with your back to the water and keep your eyes closed
  • Avoid direct spray onto the operated eyelid
  • Do not rub or scratch the area even if it feels itchy
  • Pat the skin around the eye dry with a clean towel
  • Avoid eye make-up until your clinician says it is safe

Returning to normal washing

As bruising and tenderness settle, you can gradually relax these precautions. Your clinic will advise when the wound is strong enough.

  • Normal showering is often possible after about one week
  • Continue to avoid vigorous rubbing of the eyelids
  • Ask about when hair washing over a salon basin is allowed
  • Keep strong shampoos and products away from the eye
  • Contact the clinic if redness, discharge, or pain increase after washing
