Can I fly after SMILE?

< 1 min read

Flying after SMILE is usually safe once early healing has been checked and your surgeon is happy with your progress. Cabin dryness is the main issue to plan for.

Timing and Safety

SMILE recovery is typically quick, so short‑haul flights are often allowed within a few days.

  • Confirm exact timing with your clinic, especially if you have higher prescriptions or additional eye conditions.
  • Ideally attend at least one post‑operative check before travelling.
  • Carry your eye drops and a summary of your procedure and medications in your hand luggage.
  • Avoid rubbing or pressing on your eyes during the journey.

Comfort in the Air

Low humidity and air vents can temporarily worsen dryness.

  • Use preservative‑free lubricating drops regularly during the flight and drink plenty of water.
  • Turn away or close overhead vents that blow directly at your face.
  • Try not to sleep with your eyes pressed against rough surfaces such as seat backs or pillows.
  • Seek advice promptly if you notice significant pain, redness, or sudden vision changes during or after your trip.
