Can I exercise cataract surgery?

< 1 min read

Exercise after cataract surgery should be restarted gradually to protect the healing eye. Light activity often resumes quickly, while heavier or contact sports wait longer.

Light Activity

Gentle movement is encouraged early on.

  • Walking and simple daily activities are usually fine within a day or two, if you feel comfortable.
  • Avoid straining, heavy lifting, or bending so far that your head is below your waist in the first few days.
  • Use sunglasses outdoors to reduce glare and wind exposure.
  • Do not rub your eye during or after exercise.

Strenuous and Contact Exercise

Higher‑intensity activities need your surgeon’s guidance.

  • Gym workouts, running, and non‑contact sports are often reintroduced after a week or two, depending on recovery.
  • Contact sports and swimming are usually delayed longer and should include appropriate eye protection.
  • Stop and seek advice if exercise causes pain, redness, or a drop in vision.
  • Follow personalised restrictions given at your post‑operative visits.
