Driving after YAG iridotomy is usually safe once the effects of drops have worn off and your vision is clear. Most people wait until at least the next day.
Right after the laser
You must not drive yourself home from the procedure. Dilating drops and bright light from the laser can blur and dazzle your sight.
- Arrange a lift or taxi before your appointment.
- Expect hazy vision and light sensitivity for several hours.
- Wear sunglasses when leaving the clinic.
- Rest your eyes for the remainder of the day where possible.
- Use pressure-lowering and anti-inflammatory drops exactly as prescribed.
Checking readiness to drive
Before driving again, ensure your sight meets legal standards and feels comfortable. If unsure, ask your eye specialist for personalised advice.
- Check number plates at the required distance in good daylight.
- Start with short, familiar journeys during the day.
- Delay night driving until haloes and glare improve.
- Seek urgent help for severe pain, haloes with blur, or nausea.
- Continue regular glaucoma monitoring to protect long-term driving vision.
