Driving after SLT is usually safe once the effects of drops have worn off and your vision feels clear. Many people are comfortable driving the next day.
Immediately after the procedure
You should not drive yourself home from the appointment. Dilating or numbing drops and bright lights can temporarily blur and dazzle your sight.
- Arrange transport with a friend, family member, or taxi.
- Expect some light sensitivity for several hours.
- Wear sunglasses when leaving the clinic.
- Rest your eyes for the remainder of the day if possible.
- Use all prescribed drops exactly as instructed.
Checking it is safe to drive
Before driving again, make sure your vision meets legal standards and feels comfortable. Your clinician can advise based on your specific situation.
- Test each eye separately to ensure number plates are clear at the required distance.
- Avoid night driving until glare and discomfort have settled.
- Use lubricating drops before long journeys to reduce dryness.
- Seek urgent help if you develop severe pain, sudden blur, or haloes.
- Continue regular glaucoma reviews to protect long-term driving vision.
