Can I drive after PRK?

< 1 min read

Driving after PRK is generally delayed longer than after LASIK because vision takes more time to reach legal standards. Clearance should always come from your treating clinician.

Initial Period

Driving is not safe in the first days after surgery.

  • Arrange transport home on the day of surgery and for early follow‑up visits.
  • Vision may be significantly blurred and light‑sensitive for at least several days.
  • Bandage contact lenses and discomfort further limit safe driving.
  • Rely on family, friends, or public transport until advised otherwise.

When Driving Becomes Possible

Timing varies, but a common window is 1-2 weeks.

  • Your clinician will assess visual acuity, clarity, and comfort before confirming driving suitability.
  • Start with short daytime journeys in familiar areas to rebuild confidence.
  • Night driving may need to wait longer if halos, glare, or haze are still noticeable.
  • Report any persistent difficulties so that additional treatment or temporary glasses can be considered.
