Can I drive after external Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) surgery?

< 1 min read

You must not drive immediately after external DCR surgery, but most people can drive again once vision is clear, pain is controlled, and they feel confident.

Immediately after surgery

The eye and nose area are sore and bruised, and tearing can blur vision. You will need someone to take you home.

  • Arrange a lift home in advance
  • Expect swelling, tenderness, and light sensitivity
  • Do not drive until you can comfortably see with both eyes open
  • Follow any specific instructions from your surgeon
  • Use sunglasses outdoors if brightness bothers you

Resuming safe driving

Once bruising lessens and vision meets legal standards, short journeys are usually fine. Take time to rebuild confidence.

  • Try a brief daytime journey before longer trips
  • Use lubricating drops if the eye feels dry before driving
  • Avoid driving if pain, tearing, or blur suddenly worsen
  • Delay night driving until glare and sensitivity improve
  • Seek advice if uncertain about your safety on the road
