You must not drive immediately after endoscopic DCR surgery, but most people can drive again once vision is clear, pain is controlled, and they feel confident.
Immediately after surgery
The eye and nose area may feel sore and blocked, and tearing can blur sight. You will need someone to take you home.
- Arrange a lift home well in advance
- Expect congestion, tenderness, and possible light sensitivity
- Do not drive until you can comfortably see with both eyes open
- Follow any specific instructions from your surgeon
- Use sunglasses outdoors if brightness bothers you
Resuming safe driving
Once congestion eases and vision meets legal standards, short journeys are usually fine. Build confidence gradually.
- Try a brief daytime journey before longer trips
- Use lubricating drops if the eye feels dry before driving
- Avoid driving if pain, tearing, or blur suddenly worsen
- Delay night driving until glare and sensitivity improve
- Seek advice if you remain unsure about driving safety
