Can I do housework after external Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) surgery?

< 1 min read

Most light housework is safe soon after external DCR surgery, but heavier tasks should wait to prevent strain and bleeding.

Light home activities

Gentle tasks help you stay independent without overloading the healing nose and eye. Pace yourself and rest when needed.

  • Cooking, light tidying, and simple washing up are usually fine
  • Avoid strong bending or lifting while symptoms are fresh
  • Keep cleaning products away from the eye and incision
  • Use tissues gently, dabbing rather than wiping tears or nasal discharge
  • Stop if you feel throbbing or increased bleeding

Heavier cleaning and DIY tasks

Jobs involving dust, heavy lifting, or significant effort can put pressure on the nose and tear duct area.

  • Delay vacuuming, deep cleaning, and heavy gardening for at least one to two weeks
  • Wear protective glasses or masks in dusty environments
  • Ask family or friends for help with strenuous chores initially
  • Avoid ladders until balance and vision feel steady
  • Discuss concerns about particular tasks at your check-up
