The twenty-twenty-twenty rule is a simple guideline to help reduce digital eye strain and fatigue during prolonged near work. It encourages regular breaks for the eyes.
How It Works
Every twenty minutes, you look at something at least twenty feet (around six metres) away for about twenty seconds. This relaxes the focusing muscles and encourages blinking.
- Breaks can coincide with stretching or posture adjustments
- Setting reminders or using apps can make the routine easier to follow
- Children using screens for schoolwork benefit from the same approach
- Longer or more frequent breaks may be needed for some people
Benefits
Following the rule helps reduce feelings of eye strain, dryness, and blurred vision associated with intensive screen use. It is most effective when combined with appropriate spectacle correction and ergonomic set-up.
- Promotes healthier blink patterns and tear distribution
- Gives the body a chance to move and relieve muscle tension
- Easy to implement in both office and home environments
- Does not replace the need for regular eye examinations if symptoms persist
