What is normal eye discharge?

< 1 min read

Normal eye discharge is usually a small amount of clear or slightly sticky fluid, especially on waking.

What counts as normal

The eyes constantly produce tears and oils to keep the surface smooth. Overnight, this can dry into a little crust at the corner of the eyes.

  • Clear, stringy mucus during the day can be part of dry eye
  • Small amounts of pale crust in the morning are common
  • Discharge should not cause the eyelids to stick shut firmly
  • There should be no significant pain or vision loss

When discharge suggests a problem

Changes in colour, amount, or associated symptoms can indicate infection or inflammation. Early treatment helps avoid complications and spreading germs.

  • Yellow or green discharge often points to bacterial infection
  • Watery discharge with itch may suggest allergy
  • Seek urgent help if discharge accompanies pain or vision changes
  • Avoid contact lenses until assessed by a professional
