What is meibomian gland expression?

< 1 min read

Meibomian gland expression is a technique used to clear and assess the oil‑secreting glands in the eyelids that help stabilise the tear film. It is part of dry eye and blepharitis management.

Procedure

After warming the lids, the clinician applies gentle pressure along the lid margin using fingers, specialised forceps, or instruments to encourage oils to flow from the gland openings. The quality and quantity of the expressed oil can be evaluated.

  • May cause mild discomfort or pressure but should not be painful
  • Helps unblock thickened or stagnant secretions
  • Often combined with lid hygiene and warm compresses
  • Can be performed repeatedly over a course of treatment

Clinical Role

Improving meibomian gland function enhances the lipid layer of the tear film and reduces evaporative dry eye. In some cases, in‑office thermal pulsation or intense pulsed light treatments provide more sustained expression.

  • Home care is crucial to maintain benefits between visits
  • Early intervention may help preserve gland structure
  • Discuss any tenderness or flare‑ups with your clinician
  • Expression may be adapted in patients with rosacea or other lid conditions
