Digital eye strain, also called computer vision syndrome, describes eye and visual discomfort linked to prolonged use of screens such as computers, tablets, and smartphones. Symptoms often worsen with longer viewing time.
Common Symptoms
People may experience tired, dry or irritated eyes, blurred vision, headaches, and difficulty focusing between distances after extended screen use. Neck and shoulder discomfort can also occur due to posture.
- Symptoms usually improve after rest away from screens
- Underlying uncorrected refractive error can make strain worse
- Glare, poor lighting, and small text increase visual demand
- Children may not report symptoms clearly, so behaviour changes are important clues
Prevention and Management
Managing digital eye strain involves optimising screen set-up, taking regular breaks, and correcting any refractive error. Lubricating drops and managing dry eye or blepharitis can also help.
- Follow the twenty-twenty-twenty rule and blink regularly
- Position screens at arm’s length and slightly below eye level
- Use appropriate spectacles or occupational lenses if advised
- Seek an eye examination if symptoms persist or interfere with daily tasks
