What is anti-reflective coating?

< 1 min read

Anti-reflective coating is a thin, multi-layer treatment applied to spectacle lenses to reduce surface reflections. It improves clarity and cosmetic appearance, particularly under artificial lighting and on screens.

Benefits

By allowing more light to pass through the lens and reducing glare, anti-reflective coatings can enhance contrast and reduce distracting reflections seen by both the wearer and observers. Night driving and computer work often feel more comfortable.

  • Makes lenses appear almost invisible in photographs and face-to-face conversations
  • Particularly helpful with higher prescriptions and larger lenses
  • Often combined with scratch-resistant and water-repellent layers
  • Premium coatings may resist smudging and dust more effectively

Care

Lenses with anti-reflective coatings should be cleaned with suitable cloths and solutions to avoid damage. Abrasive materials or harsh chemicals can scratch or degrade the coating.

  • Rinse off grit before wiping the lenses
  • Store spectacles in a protective case when not in use
  • Ask your optician about warranty and expected lifespan of the coating
  • Replace heavily scratched lenses to maintain optical quality
