Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight can contribute to cataract, pterygium, pinguecula and some surface cancers. Protecting the eyes from cumulative UV exposure is an important part of long-term eye health.
Protection strategies
Wearing sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB, together with a wide-brimmed hat, significantly reduces the amount of UV reaching the eyes. Children and people spending long periods outdoors, on water or snow, benefit particularly from consistent protection.
- Choose sunglasses labelled with full UVA and UVB or UV400 protection
- Wraparound frames or side shields help limit light entering from the sides
- Contact lenses with UV filters provide partial additional protection but do not replace sunglasses
- Avoid direct viewing of the sun, including during eclipses
