Amniotic membrane

< 1 min read

Amniotic membrane is a thin tissue from the innermost layer of the placenta that can be processed and used as a graft on the eye surface. It promotes healing and reduces inflammation in certain corneal and conjunctival diseases.

When it is used

Surgeons apply it in theatre or clinic.

  • Persistent epithelial defects or non‑healing corneal ulcers
  • Chemical injuries or severe ocular surface inflammation
  • Pterygium surgery or conjunctival reconstruction
  • As a temporary bandage or permanently sutured graft

Benefits

The membrane acts as a biologic dressing.

  • Provides a smooth surface that supports regrowth of healthy tissue
  • Contains natural anti‑inflammatory and anti‑scarring factors
  • Can reduce pain and speed recovery in selected cases
  • Derived from screened donors and processed to meet safety standards
