What is video recording of eye movement?

< 1 min read

Video recording of eye movement captures and analyses ocular motions over time to assess alignment, tracking, and involuntary movements. It is useful in orthoptic and neuro-ophthalmic evaluation.

Method

Cameras mounted on goggles or positioned in front of the patient record eye positions while the person looks at various targets or performs specific tasks. Software or frame-by-frame review allows measurement of movement amplitude, frequency, and patterns.

  • Can be performed in room light or darkness with infrared illumination
  • Helpful for documenting nystagmus, saccades, and pursuit
  • May include head movement tracking to separate eye and head components
  • Recordings can be replayed for detailed analysis and teaching

Clinical Role

This approach supports diagnosis of vestibular disorders, congenital or acquired nystagmus, and complex strabismus. It also helps plan and evaluate treatments such as surgery or pharmacological therapy.

  • Allows objective comparison before and after intervention
  • Captures episodic events that might be missed on brief examination
  • Provides visual documentation for multidisciplinary discussions
  • Interpretation requires knowledge of normal eye movement behaviour
