What is optic nerve photography?

< 1 min read

Optic nerve photography involves capturing detailed images of the optic disc at the back of the eye. It creates a permanent record of the nerve head for comparison over time.

Why images are useful

Photographs help document features such as cupping, rim thinning and disc haemorrhages that may indicate glaucoma. They also assist in monitoring optic disc swelling or pallor from other neurological and vascular conditions.

  • Digital images can be reviewed side by side across many years
  • Change is often easier to appreciate when a clear baseline is available
  • Pupil dilation may improve image quality in some patients
  • Images are interpreted together with OCT and visual field results
