Primary open-angle glaucoma is the most common type of glaucoma. The drainage angle appears open on examination, but fluid outflow through the trabecular meshwork becomes less efficient over time.
Characteristics
Eye pressure may be mildly to moderately raised, but some patients have normal-tension glaucoma where pressure readings are within the usual range. Damage progresses slowly and painlessly, initially affecting peripheral vision.
- Often detected during routine eye examinations
- Family history and age increase risk
- Can occur alongside other eye diseases
Diagnosis and Management
Diagnosis relies on optic nerve assessment, visual field testing, and OCT imaging of the nerve fibre layer. Treatment typically begins with pressure-lowering drops, with laser or surgery if needed.
