What is ocular migraine?

< 1 min read

Ocular migraine describes temporary visual disturbances that may occur with or without a headache.

What ocular migraine feels like

Many people notice shimmering lights, zigzag lines, or blank patches in their vision. These changes usually build over minutes and then fade within an hour.

  • Visual symptoms can affect one or both eyes
  • Some episodes are followed by a typical throbbing headache
  • Bright light, stress, or lack of sleep may act as triggers
  • Between attacks, eye examination is often entirely normal

When to worry about symptoms

Ocular migraine is usually harmless but can be frightening. A full eye and medical check helps rule out more serious causes like a mini-stroke or retinal problem.

  • Seek urgent care for sudden permanent vision loss or new severe headache
  • Keep a diary to track frequency, triggers, and associated symptoms
  • Lifestyle changes and migraine medicines can reduce attack frequency
  • Do not drive until visual disturbances have completely cleared
