What is hyperopia?

< 1 min read

Hyperopia, or long-sight, is a refractive error in which the eye focuses light behind the retina. It often makes near tasks more difficult and can cause eye strain or headaches.

How Hyperopia Affects Vision

Younger people may compensate by focusing harder, so distance vision can remain clear while near work is tiring. Higher degrees can blur both near and distance vision.

  • Common in children, where it may be associated with squint or amblyopia
  • Symptoms often become more noticeable with age and presbyopia
  • Can contribute to narrow angles and angle-closure risk

Correction

Hyperopia is corrected with plus-powered glasses or contact lenses. Refractive surgery or lens-based procedures may be considered for adults seeking long-term correction; these are discussed on Blue Fin Vision®’s refractive and lens replacement pages and in blogs comparing long- and short-sightedness.

Importance of Assessment

Children with significant hyperopia require careful monitoring to prevent amblyopia and strabismus.
