What is ectropion?

< 1 min read

Ectropion is an outward turning of the eyelid margin, usually affecting the lower lid. This can expose the eye surface and interfere with normal tear drainage.

Symptoms and causes

Typical symptoms include watering, irritation and redness of the eye. Age-related tissue laxity is the most common cause, although scarring, facial nerve weakness or previous surgery can also contribute.

  • Can lead to soreness and recurrent conjunctivitis if untreated
  • Lubricants and taping offer temporary relief
  • Definitive management usually involves eyelid-tightening surgery
  • Timely treatment helps protect the cornea
