Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) is a condition where fluid collects under the central retina, causing a small area of detachment at the macula. It commonly affects working-age adults and often occurs in one eye at a time.
How CSCR affects vision
People may notice a central blur, distortion, a grey patch or slight reduction in colour and contrast. Many episodes resolve spontaneously over weeks to months, although some become chronic or recurrent.
- Linked with stress, steroid use and certain personality traits
- Diagnosis is confirmed with retinal imaging such as OCT
- Observation is appropriate for many first episodes
- Persistent cases may be treated with targeted laser or medications
