What is blepharitis and what causes it?

< 1 min read

Blepharitis is a common, long‑term inflammation of the eyelid margins that often causes redness, crusting, and irritation around the lashes. It frequently coexists with dry eye.

Types and Causes

Anterior blepharitis affects the skin and lash roots and is often linked to bacterial overgrowth or skin conditions such as seborrhoeic dermatitis. Posterior blepharitis involves the meibomian oil glands, which can become blocked and produce poor‑quality secretions.

  • Symptoms include grittiness, burning, intermittent blur, and crusting at the lashes
  • Associated conditions include rosacea and dandruff
  • Contact lens wear and cosmetics can exacerbate symptoms
  • Blepharitis can contribute to styes and chalazia forming

Management

Treatment focuses on regular eyelid hygiene with warm compresses and gentle lid cleaning. Lubricating drops, topical or oral antibiotics, and anti‑inflammatory therapies are added when needed.

  • Condition tends to be chronic, requiring ongoing maintenance rather than cure
  • Consistent daily care reduces flare‑ups and improves comfort
  • Managing associated skin disease helps control symptoms
  • Patients should seek review if pain, marked redness, or vision changes develop
