Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelid margins, often involving blockage of the oil glands that line the lashes. It can cause irritation, crusting and a gritty sensation.
Common features
Symptoms include red eyelid rims, flakes at the base of the lashes and intermittent dryness or watering. Episodes may come and go, and it is frequently associated with rosacea or seborrhoeic skin conditions.
