What is acne rosacea?

< 1 min read

Acne rosacea, more commonly termed rosacea, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes facial redness, flushing, visible blood vessels, and sometimes papules or pustules resembling acne. It often affects the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin.

Features and Subtypes

Rosacea can present with persistent redness, episodes of flushing, and sensitive skin that stings or burns. Some people develop thickened skin, particularly over the nose, or involvement of the eyes in the form of ocular rosacea.

  • More frequent in fair-skinned adults, typically between 30 and 60 years of age
  • Common triggers include heat, alcohol, spicy foods, and emotional stress
  • Ocular symptoms such as dry, irritated eyes may occur
  • Course is chronic with periods of flare and remission

Management

Management is based on avoiding known triggers, using gentle skincare, and applying or taking medications to control inflammation. Light-based therapies may be considered for prominent blood vessels, and eye symptoms are managed with appropriate ocular treatments when present.

  • Topical agents can reduce inflammatory lesions and background redness
  • Oral antibiotics are sometimes used for more extensive disease
  • Daily sun protection is recommended to reduce flares
  • Long-term follow-up helps adjust treatment as skin needs change
