How is dry eye treated?

< 1 min read

Treatment of dry eye focuses on improving tear quality and quantity, reducing inflammation, and optimising the ocular surface environment. Management is usually stepwise.

First-Line Measures

Preservative-free lubricating drops or gels, lid hygiene, warm compresses, and environmental adjustments are often recommended initially. Addressing systemic factors and medication side effects is also important.

  • Frequent use of artificial tears tailored to severity
  • Lid warming and massage for meibomian gland dysfunction
  • Omega?3 intake and hydration may support tear quality

Advanced Therapies

For more severe disease, options include anti-inflammatory drops, punctal plugs, in-office lid treatments, or serum-based tears. Treatment plans are individualised based on subtype and response.
