Eye “freckles” are small pigmented spots that can occur on the iris, conjunctiva, or retina. Many are benign, but some need monitoring.
Examples
Different structures show different types of pigmentation.
- Iris freckles and naevi visible on the coloured part of the eye
- Conjunctival ephelides or naevi on the eye surface
- Choroidal naevi at the back of the eye seen during examination
- Occasional association with conditions like ocular or oculodermal melanocytosis
Assessment and follow-up
Evaluation focuses on excluding malignancy.
- Slit-lamp and fundus examination with photographs for comparison
- Monitoring for growth, irregular borders, vascularity, or symptoms
- Sun protection advice and review intervals tailored to risk
- Prompt referral to specialists if features suggest early melanoma
