Exotropia is a type of strabismus where one eye turns outward. It may be constant or intermittent and can affect both children and adults.
Symptoms and types
Eye misalignment impacts both appearance and binocular vision.
- Outward drifting of one eye, especially when tired or daydreaming
- Double vision in older children and adults, or suppression in younger children
- Types include intermittent, constant, sensory, and consecutive exotropia
- Risk of amblyopia if onset is early and untreated
Treatment
Management aims to improve alignment and visual function.
- Glasses and sometimes prisms for refractive errors and small deviations
- Occlusion therapy for amblyopia
- Strabismus surgery on eye muscles for significant or symptomatic exotropia
- Ongoing follow-up to monitor control over time
