Entropion

< 1 min read

Entropion is a condition where the eyelid margin turns inward so that the lashes rub against the eye. It usually affects the lower lid and can be intermittent or constant.

Symptoms and causes

Lashes scraping the cornea cause irritation and risk of damage. Several different mechanisms can lead to entropion.

  • Watery, gritty, or painful eye with a feeling of something in it
  • Redness, light sensitivity, and blurred vision from surface damage
  • Age-related lid laxity, scarring, previous surgery, or congenital problems
  • Spastic entropion triggered by inflammation or eye closure

Treatment options

Short-term measures protect the eye, but surgery usually gives the best lasting relief. The goal is to turn the lid margin back to a normal position.

  • Lubricants, taping, or temporary stitches to protect the cornea
  • Definitive eyelid surgery to tighten and rotate the lid
  • Treating underlying inflammation or scarring to prevent recurrence
  • Regular review to monitor the cornea, especially in vulnerable patients
