Common age-related eye problems

< 1 min read

Several eye conditions become more common with age, but early detection and treatment can preserve good vision. Regular eye checks are especially important from the mid-40s onwards.

Frequent age-related conditions

Most older adults develop at least one of these problems, often in both eyes.

  • Cataracts causing cloudy, glare-sensitive vision
  • Age-related macular degeneration affecting central detail
  • Glaucoma gradually damaging the optic nerve and peripheral vision
  • Presbyopia and dry eye affecting near tasks and comfort

Looking after ageing eyes

Many conditions can be monitored or treated effectively if found early. Lifestyle and health choices also play a role.

  • Routine dilated eye exams, especially if there is a family history
  • Control of blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes
  • Not smoking, using UV protection, and maintaining a balanced diet
  • Prompt attention to new symptoms such as distortion, flashes, or a curtain over vision
