Balint syndrome

< 1 min read

Balint syndrome is a rare neurological disorder caused by bilateral parietal-occipital brain damage. Eyes are usually normal, but visual processing is profoundly affected.

Core features

The classic triad disrupts how a person sees and interacts with space.

  • Simultanagnosia difficulty perceiving more than one object at a time
  • Optic ataxia poor visually guided reaching despite good limb strength
  • Oculomotor apraxia difficulty initiating purposeful eye movements
  • Often due to stroke, trauma, or degenerative disease

Management

There is no specific cure; rehabilitation focuses on adaptation.

  • Neuro-ophthalmology assessment to clarify deficits
  • Occupational and visual rehabilitation therapies
  • Management of underlying causes such as vascular risk factors
  • Support for daily living, reading, and mobility tasks
