Asteroid hyalosis is a benign condition where numerous small calcium-lipid deposits float in the vitreous gel. It usually affects one eye and rarely impairs vision significantly.
Appearance and impact
The deposits are highly reflective and move with eye movements.
- Fundus view shows multiple white or yellow sparkling bodies
- Patients are often asymptomatic, though mild floaters may be noticed
- Can make retinal examination or imaging more challenging
- Associated with ageing and sometimes systemic metabolic disease
Management
Most cases need no treatment.
- Reassurance when vision is unaffected
- Vitrectomy only rarely considered for severe visual disturbance or imaging difficulties
- Routine monitoring of the retina for unrelated disease
- General health review if other risk factors are present
