What happens if I develop a cataract within two years of surgery?

3 min read

Anterior subcapsular cataract is the most clinically significant long-term risk associated with ICL surgery. It arises from disruption to the anterior lens epithelium – the cellular layer responsible for maintaining the clarity of the crystalline lens. The mechanism is most commonly related to vault: a lens sitting too close to the natural crystalline lens creates chronic mechanical or metabolic stress that initiates the opacification process. ¹ ²

Cataract development within the first two years of ICL implantation is uncommon, but when it occurs, it most likely reflects a sizing or vault problem inherent to the original surgical episode rather than natural lens ageing. ³ The financial and clinical implication is clear: this is a complication of surgery, not an independent disease.

At Blue Fin Vision®, cataract developing within two years of ICL implantation is managed entirely under the Blue Fin Vision® Advantage package at no additional cost to the patient. This means that the full pathway – ICL removal, cataract surgery, and intraocular lens implantation – is covered. The rationale is straightforward: if a complication of surgery occurs within a clinically relevant window of the procedure itself, the financial responsibility lies with the practice, not the patient.

Patients should ask this question at every ICL consultation and request the answer in writing. The response tells them as much about the practice’s clinical confidence as it does about the financial arrangement.
