Outcome transparency is the single most reliable differentiator between clinical practices that hold themselves to account and those that do not. Any surgeon offering ICL surgery has a refractive outcome dataset – refraction at three months, vault measurements at one year, enhancement rates, and complication incidence. ¹ ² Whether they share that data with prospective patients is a meaningful indicator of how they understand their clinical responsibilities.
The absence of published outcome data should prompt scrutiny. It is not proof of poor results – it may reflect volume, administrative priorities, or the norms of a particular practice. But a surgeon who has never been asked for their results, or who deflects the question, is operating in a lower-accountability environment than one who anticipates it.
At Blue Fin Vision®, Mr Mfazo Hove publishes National Ophthalmology Database outcome data across four consecutive years, with complication rates benchmarked against national standards. For refractive surgery specifically, outcome data from the STAAR STELLA calculator-based ICL programme is maintained as an internal audit and used to refine lens sizing accuracy over time. ³ Patients asking for outcome data at their Blue Fin Vision® consultation will receive a direct and specific answer.
The question to ask is not “are your outcomes good?” – it is “can you show me your outcomes?” The first question invites reassurance. The second requires evidence.
