The cost of enhancement depends on how your original procedure was funded.
At Blue Fin Vision®, this is explained clearly before surgery so expectations are aligned from the outset. Radical transparency in ophthalmology means patients understand their enhancement coverage before treatment begins, not when they need one.
Enhancement is not about correcting a mistake. It is about refining the final visual result when biology places you very close, but not perfectly, at your intended target.
Laser Eye Surgery (Self-Pay)
All laser eye surgery procedures, LASIK, SMILE and PRK, are self-pay.
If an enhancement is clinically required within the defined post-operative period:
- It is covered within the original surgical fee.
- There are no hidden “top-up” charges for completing the visual plan.
Healing varies slightly between individuals. When small refinements are needed, we complete the journey.
Self-Pay Cataract or Lens Replacement
For patients who choose cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange (RLE) on a self-pay basis, particularly with premium intraocular lenses, refinement is considered part of achieving the intended visual outcome.
If enhancement is required:
- It is covered within the original surgical fee.
Both surgeon and patient want the same result: exceptional clarity. We therefore take responsibility for completing the plan when refinement is needed.
Enhancement in this context is not an extra. It is precision finishing.
Insurance Cataract Patients (Premium Lens Upgrade)
For patients whose cataract surgery was funded by insurance and who chose a premium lens upgrade, Blue Fin Vision® now fully covers enhancement procedures at no additional cost to the patient.
Insurance covers medically necessary cataract removal. It does not cover refractive optimisation or premium outcomes. Previously, this gap meant enhancement costs were shared between the patient and the clinic. Under Blue Fin Vision®’s updated and clearer and fairer enhancement policy, that cost-sharing arrangement has been removed entirely.
If a small residual prescription remains and further refinement is clinically appropriate:
- Enhancement is fully covered by Blue Fin Vision®.
- There is no patient contribution.
- Coverage applies within 24 months of the original procedure.
Blue Fin Vision® has taken the position that if you choose premium optics, we stand behind the refractive outcome. That means accepting full responsibility for refinement when it is needed, rather than passing a portion of the cost back to the patient.
Insurance Cataract Patients (Standard Monofocal Lens)
For patients whose cataract surgery was funded by insurance using a standard monofocal lens, enhancement procedures are not included. The clinical objective of monofocal cataract surgery is restoring functional vision rather than achieving spectacle independence, and this aligns with NHS and insurance treatment objectives.
Enhancement is not about blame. It is about alignment. And when refinement is needed on a refractive or premium lens pathway, Blue Fin Vision® covers it.
