How Is LASIK Enhancement Performed?

1 min read

LASIK enhancement is typically performed by lifting the original corneal flap and applying additional excimer laser ablation to refine the residual refractive error.

Flap relifting avoids creation of a new stromal interface and preserves biomechanical stability when adequate residual stromal bed remains. Large clinical series analysing retreatments after LASIK demonstrate excellent safety and predictability when enhancement is performed after refractive stability has been confirmed¹.

Timing matters. Enhancements are usually delayed for a minimum of three months following primary LASIK to allow epithelial and refractive stabilisation. Early treatment risks correcting transient shifts related to wound healing.

Flap relift is generally straightforward within the first 12–24 months, although even late relifts have been reported successfully. Careful surgical handling reduces risk of epithelial ingrowth, one of the known but uncommon complications of flap relift². When ingrowth occurs, prompt management restores optical clarity.

Enhancement outcomes closely mirror primary LASIK accuracy. Modern outcome analyses show high rates of patients achieving 20/20 or better uncorrected vision following retreatment³.

Key principles for safe LASIK enhancement include:

  • Adequate residual stromal bed (typically ≥300 microns)
  • Stable refraction documented on repeated testing
  • Normal corneal topography
  • Optimised ocular surface

When these criteria are met, LASIK enhancement is highly predictable and well tolerated.

Retreatment is refinement, not repetition of risk.
