What are symptoms of retinal tear?

< 1 min read

A retinal tear is a rip in the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye. Recognising symptoms early can prevent detachment.

Typical symptoms

Retinal tears often follow changes in the vitreous gel. Symptoms may appear suddenly and usually affect one eye.

  • Sudden shower of new floaters, like spots, strands, or cobwebs
  • Flashes of light at the edge of vision, especially in the dark
  • Mild blur or distortion in part of the visual field
  • Occasionally a small shadow near the area of the tear

Why urgent treatment matters

Untreated tears can allow fluid under the retina, leading to detachment. Quick laser or freezing treatment often seals them safely.

  • Seek urgent same-day assessment for new flashes and floaters
  • Higher risk exists in short-sighted people and after eye surgery or trauma
  • Even painless symptoms can signal serious change
  • Regular checks may be advised if you have had previous tears
