A grey curtain across vision is a classic warning sign of retinal detachment or other serious eye problems.
Retinal causes
When the retina detaches or large areas stop receiving blood, part of the visual field can fade or darken.
- Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment following a retinal tear
- Vitreous haemorrhage casting a dense shadow
- Advanced diabetic eye disease with traction on the retina
- Retinal vein or artery occlusions in severe cases
Urgent action needed
A grey curtain is always an emergency until proven otherwise. Delay risks permanent sight loss.
- Seek same-day emergency eye care or attend A&E
- Describe exactly when and how the curtain appeared
- Do not drive yourself if vision is compromised
- Prompt surgery or laser can often prevent further damage
