Floppy eyelid syndrome occurs when the upper eyelids become unusually loose and easily flip outwards.
Underlying factors
The exact cause is not fully understood, but changes in the elastic tissue of the lids make them lax. It is strongly associated with obstructive sleep apnoea and higher body weight.
- Mechanical rubbing of lids against pillows during sleep
- Chronic eye irritation and inflammation weakening lid tissues
- Possible connective tissue abnormalities
- Often affects middle-aged men but can occur in others
Symptoms patients may notice
Because the lids flip or gape during sleep, the eye surface becomes exposed. This leads to persistent discomfort.
- Red, sticky, or crusted eyes on waking
- Grittiness, watering, and light sensitivity
- Chronic conjunctivitis or corneal damage
- Snoring or daytime sleepiness suggesting sleep apnoea
