Hot tubs and swimming pools are usually unsafe soon after eye surgery because of infection risk.
Why hot tubs are a concern
Warm, shared water allows bacteria and other germs to thrive. These can enter the healing eye and cause serious infection.
- Chemicals do not remove all infection risk
- Splashes can carry germs directly into the eye
- Steam and heat may worsen swelling and discomfort
- Contact lenses should never be worn in hot tubs
When it is safer to return
Your surgeon will advise a specific time-frame, often several weeks. Waiting protects the result of your surgery and your long-term vision.
- Follow written post-operative instructions about water exposure
- Avoid swimming pools, lakes, and saunas until cleared
- Use protective goggles when you do return to water activities
- Seek urgent care if the eye becomes painful or red after water exposure
