Is it normal to have light sensitivity after surgery?

< 1 min read

Mild light sensitivity is very common after eye surgery and usually improves as healing progresses.

Why light can feel uncomfortable

The surface and internal structures of the eye are temporarily more sensitive while tissues heal. The pupil may also respond differently if drops or surgery have affected it.

  • Bright sunlight, car headlights, or screens may feel dazzling
  • Watery eyes and a gritty feeling can worsen glare
  • Sensitivity often peaks in the first few days
  • Most people notice gradual improvement over weeks

When sensitivity needs review

Sudden, severe, or one-sided light sensitivity can signal inflammation or infection. If symptoms are strong or worsening, seek advice promptly.

  • Wear sunglasses outdoors and consider a hat with a brim
  • Contact your clinic if pain or vision changes accompany glare
  • Use prescribed drops exactly as directed
  • Avoid driving until light feels manageable and vision is clear
