What is fixation disparity test?

< 1 min read

A fixation disparity test checks how precisely your eyes align when working together on a target.

How the fixation disparity test works

Special images are shown separately to each eye using coloured filters or polarised lenses. The examiner then asks how the pictures appear to you to measure small alignment errors.

  • The test usually takes place after a standard eye examination
  • You may wear red-green or polarised glasses during the test
  • Small misalignments can cause strain even if vision seems clear
  • The procedure is entirely painless and non-invasive

Why this test is useful

Fixation disparity testing helps uncover subtle binocular vision problems. Treating these issues can relieve symptoms such as headaches, blurred near vision, or difficulty with screens.

  • Results guide prism prescriptions or eye exercises called vision therapy
  • Particularly helpful for people with near-work related discomfort
  • Supports accurate focusing during reading and computer use
  • Can be repeated to monitor progress after treatment
