Floppy eyelid syndrome is a condition where the upper eyelids are unusually loose and easily everted.
How floppy eyelid syndrome affects comfort
The lax lids can flip inside out during sleep, especially when lying face-down or on one side. This exposes the eye surface, leading to irritation, discharge, and chronic redness.
- Patients often wake with sore, sticky, or crusted eyes
- The condition commonly affects both eyes but may be worse on one side
- It is frequently linked with obstructive sleep apnoea and obesity
- Untreated, it can contribute to long-term dry eye and corneal damage
Managing floppy eyelid syndrome
Treatment aims to protect the cornea and address any underlying sleep disorder. Early management improves comfort and reduces the risk of permanent surface problems.
- Night-time eye shields or taping can help keep lids in position
- Lubricating ointments protect the surface while sleeping
- Referral for sleep apnoea assessment is often recommended
- Eyelid tightening surgery may be advised for persistent or severe cases
