Is ICL surgery suitable if anterior chamber depth is adequate?

< 1 min read

Adequate anterior chamber depth is a key requirement for ICL surgery and strongly supports suitability, but other factors still need to be checked.

Why chamber depth matters

It protects internal structures.

  • Ensures enough space between the ICL and natural lens to avoid cataract formation
  • Helps maintain a safe distance from the corneal endothelium
  • Reduces risk of angle crowding and pressure rise
  • Allows proper vault once the lens is in place
  • Forms part of manufacturer and regulatory safety guidelines

Other requirements beyond depth

Depth alone is not sufficient.

  • Healthy endothelium, retina, and optic nerve
  • Stable prescription and suitable refractive range
  • No uncontrolled glaucoma or uveitis
  • Accurate biometry for sizing to achieve appropriate vault
  • Commitment to follow‑up including periodic vault scans
