Is YAG capsulotomy suitable for dense PCO?

< 1 min read

Dense posterior capsule opacification is strongly suited to YAG capsulotomy, as visual benefit is usually significant.

Characteristics of dense PCO

The capsule acts almost like a new cataract.

  • Marked reduction in vision with pronounced haze and glare
  • Difficulties reading, driving, or recognising faces
  • Posterior capsule visibly thick and fibrotic behind the lens
  • Retina hard to inspect clearly until an opening is made
  • High expectation of improved acuity and contrast after laser

Special considerations

Dense opacities may require a slightly larger or more careful opening.

  • Possibility of more noticeable floaters immediately afterwards
  • Need for closer pressure monitoring in the early period
  • Re‑evaluation of retina and macula once the view improves
  • Discussion of rare risks such as lens pitting or retinal tears
  • Overall strong benefit-risk balance in most patients
